Sprawling across 74 acres, the Rumtek Monastery was established by H.H. the 16th Karmapa, who diligently practiced dharma at what is now known as the old Rumtek monastery. At his request, the then Chogyal, Tashi Namgyal, generously offered the land on which the grand Rumtek monastery now stands.
Rumtek serves as a hub for Buddhist studies, drawing scholars from far and wide to immerse themselves in the teachings and practices of Buddhism. The monastery is perpetually abuzz with spiritual activity, offering visitors glimpses into the daily routines of Buddhist monks as they go about their dedicated lives.
SIGHTSEEING & ACTIVITIES
To reach the monastery, visitors embark on a short, serene walk uphill from the entrance gate at the main road, as vehicles beyond this point are restricted. A splendid example of Tibetan architecture, the Rumtek Monastery replicates the esteemed Tsurpu monastery in Tibet. Its vibrant exteriors, set against the backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery, create a truly enchanting experience. As you explore the monastery's multiple levels, you will be immersed in a profound spiritual ambiance, allowing you to witness the simplicity and dedication of the monks' lives.
Within the monastery complex stands a golden stupa, enshrining the sacred relics of the 15th Karmapa. Photography is strictly prohibited in this sacred space, which is adorned with images depicting landmark events, revered Buddhist leaders, and vital documents relevant to the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. You can meditate in this serene environment while maintaining a respectful silence.
Another delight is witnessing the various rituals performed by the monks throughout the day. The participants, adorned in traditional attire, skillfully play soul-stirring music and chant mantras from their sacred texts. The harmonious ensemble exudes a profound sense of devotion and unity.
