Thangu Valley

Thangu Valley, a quaint village near Lachen on the route to Gurudongmar Lake, is a picturesque hamlet with charming rows of wooden and stone houses serving as eateries for passing tourists. Situated at a high altitude of 3962m in the Alpine range of mountains, this place offers a unique and different lifestyle experience. Serene, laid-back, and far from the hustle of city life, Thangu welcomes visitors with its small, cozy houses, where inhabitants still embrace old traditional methods of cooking and daily chores. Many households have their kitchen gardens and sheds, adding to the rustic charm.

Due to its proximity to the army base, Thangu has strict surveillance and photography restrictions in certain areas. Army personnel can be seen moving around, ensuring the region's security. Despite this, Thangu remains an ideal spot for a stopover, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in the sheer beauty of the mountains up close.

Thangu Valley has several rivers, including the Teesta, Chopta, Thangu, and Lassur, meandering through verdant meadows. Seeing their sparkling waters flowing gracefully amidst the landscape is truly captivating. As you ascend altitude, the vegetation thins out, revealing glimpses of the Tibetan plateau with minimal greenery.
