How To Reach Lachung

Lachung, Sikkim, is one of the most beautiful high-altitude mountain villages in North Sikkim, known for its pristine landscapes, snow-covered peaks, alpine meadows, and the breathtaking Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. By Air:

The nearest airport to Lachung is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, located approximately 190 km away. Bagdogra is well-connected with major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore. After landing at Bagdogra, the scenic drive to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, takes around 4 to 5 hours. For slow travel, you must stay in Gangtok for at least one day. Early the next morning, you begin the scenic journey from Gangtok to Lachung, covering about 120 km in 5 to 6 hours.

Alternatively, Pakyong Airport, located around 140 km from Lachung, may reduce travel time once more regular flights become operational.

By Rail:

For those who prefer train travel, the nearest major railway station to Lachung is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri, West Bengal, about 180 km away. From NJP, you can hire a taxi or shared cab to reach Gangtok. As with air travel, you must halt in Gangtok for permit processing. After arranging everything through your travel agent, start early the next morning for Lachung via a picturesque mountain drive. This route offers stunning views of rivers, valleys, and mountain terrain.

By Road:

Lachung is well-connected by road via Gangtok, which serves as the main gateway to North Sikkim. The road journey from Gangtok to Lachung takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. Although some sections of the road may be rough due to landslides or snowfall, the journey is incredibly scenic, making it a memorable experience. Travelers are advised to use local registered vehicles, as private or self-drive cars are not permitted beyond Gangtok.
