Dawki is one of the most beautiful tourist places in Meghalaya. It is known for the crystal-clear water of the Umngot River, green hills, riverside villages and its proximity to the India-Bangladesh border. Dawki in West Jaintia Hills District is more than just a place to stop and take pictures. You can go for a boat ride, explore the countryside, visit Shnongpdeng nearby, and see the unique landscape where the hills of Meghalaya meet the plains of Bangladesh.

This Dawki travel guide covers the best time to visit Dawki, things to do in Dawki, how to reach Dawki, where to stay in Dawki, and helpful travel tips, whether you are planning a day trip from Shillong or you want to spend a night beside the river.

Why visit Dawki?

Umngot River is the main attraction of Dawki. Its water is famous for being crystal clear. During the dry months, especially in winter, the river can be so clear that boats seem to be floating above the riverbed. It is a scenic destination for photographers and nature lovers, with hills all around and rocky riverbanks.

Dawki also has an interesting geographical location. It lies close to the border between India and Bangladesh, and the scenery changes fast as the green hills drop into the plains of Bangladesh.

Kayaking, camping, snorkelling, scuba diving, ziplining, and trekking are available for adventure lovers in the wider expanse of Dawki-Shnongpdeng-Darrang.

Best Places to Visit in & Around Dawki

1. Umngot River

The Umngot River is the heart of any trip to Dawki. The water is clear and emerald green and looks particularly lovely in dry sunny weather. You can take a classic boat ride, enjoy the views of the riverside, or just take a while to shoot the scenery.

The river also flows through Shnongpdeng and Darrang, where more camping and outdoor activities can be found. Meghalaya Tourism suggests a minimum of two days to enjoy the river-based activities in the region.

2. Dawki Suspension Bridge

The historic bridge over the Umngot provides another view of the River. From here, you can look down at the water and hills around and feel the importance of Dawki as a border and trade route.

This is a simple add-on to your journey through Dawki town.

3. Dawki-Tamabil Border

Dawki is on the India-Bangladesh border, and Tamabil is on the Bangladesh side. The border landscape is a unique feature of the destination.

But remember, this is an international border zone. Follow the instructions of security staff. Do not take photographs in the restricted areas.

4. Shnongpdeng

Shnongpdeng is the ideal place to extend your trip to Dawki. It is located on the Umngot River. The town is known for riverside camping and adventure activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, and other water-based activities.

A quieter experience is staying overnight near Shnongpdeng rather than rushing back to Shillong the same day, and it is a far more pleasant option.

5. Mawlynnong Village

Dawki is often part of Mawlynnong tours in Meghalaya. The village is known for its clean surroundings, traditional Khasi culture, and the living root bridge.

A combination of Mawlynnong and Dawki is a great option for tourists who want to visit the village scenes of Meghalaya along with the famous Umngot River in a single day.

6.Living Root Bridges

The famous living root bridges of Meghalaya are found in the larger area around Dawki and Mawlynnong. These amazing structures are created by training the roots of rubber fig trees over streams and allowing them to grow strong over time.

If you want to go off the beaten path, there are some lesser-known root bridges around the Dawki area which are worth considering.

What to do in Dawki

There are plenty of things to do in Dawki, from relaxed sightseeing to outdoor adventure.

  1. Umngot River Boat Ride:

One of the most common things to experience is a traditional boat ride. Especially on a nice day, when the water is calm and the hills around are.

  1. Go kayaking:

The Shnongpdeng is a favourite kayaking spot. You can enjoy the scenery and experience the river at a slower pace.

  1. Camp:

Depending on the season and local operators, you can try snorkelling, scuba diving, and swimming. Always use suitable equipment and follow local safety notices.

  1. Walk around the villages:

  1. Experiment with photography:

Dawki is a photographer’s delight with plenty of photo ops from the river, suspension bridge, hills, and border scenery.

Best Time to Visit Dawki

The best time to visit Dawki is between October and May as the weather is more favourable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Meghalaya Tourism recommends this time for Dawki especially.

The clearest views of the Umngot River are seen especially during the post-monsoon and winter months. Meghalaya Tourism says the winter months, notably November to February, can provide particularly clear views of the rivers.

The monsoon season in Meghalaya is characterised by lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls, but heavy rain can affect roads and outdoor activities. If you are travelling during the rainy season, keep your itinerary flexible and check the weather and road conditions before leaving.

Reaching Dawki

By road, Dawki is accessible from Shillong and Jowai. It is approx. 80-85 km from Shillong and will take about 3 hours depending on the road and traffic conditions. It is 55 km from Jowai.

From Shillong:

One of the most convenient options is to hire a private cab, especially if you are travelling with family or plan to stop at Mawlynnong and other attractions en route.

Shared taxis are another option, but less convenient if you want to stop at several places.

From Guwahati:

Guwahati is the main point of arrival if you are flying into North East India. Guwahati is accessible by road. From Guwahati, you can go to Shillong and then to Dawki.

Meghalaya Tourism says that the distance between Dawki and Guwahati Airport is about 208 km, but travel time may vary depending on traffic and road conditions.

Most travellers find it easier to organise a private car for the Guwahati-Shillong-Dawki route rather than try to co-ordinate a number of different transfers.

Best Places to Stay in Dawki

There are some accommodations in Dawki but not as many as in Shillong. If you want convenience, you can stay in or near Dawki town.

If you are looking for a more picturesque experience, you can opt to stay around Shnongpdeng. This way, you can spend more time near the Umngot. There are many riverside camps and homestays here.

If you have a larger Meghalaya itinerary, you can also stay in Shillong and take a day trip to Dawki. However, if you want to cover Mawlynnong, boating, and other attractions, a day trip might be hectic.

How many days are enough for Dawki?

Dawki is a short trip, and a full day is enough to visit for a quick trip and experience the full Umngot River.

But if you want to include Shnongpdeng and camping and adventure activities, then two days are better. Meghalaya Tourism recommends at least two days to explore the larger Umngot adventure circuit.

Here’s a simple plan:

Day 1: Shillong → Mawlynnong → Dawki → Umngot River → Shnongpdeng.

Day 2: Morning river activities → Visit to nearby villages → Back to Shillong or continue your tour in Meghalaya.

Tips for travelling to Dawki

Dawki is kind of a remote place. A little bit of planning can make the trip much smoother.

  • Start early if you are travelling from Shillong, particularly if you want to cover many attractions.
  • Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes as some areas of the riverside and village may be uneven.
  • Pack a light rain jacket or an umbrella because the weather in Meghalaya can change rapidly.
  • Waterproof bags for phones, cameras, and other electronics.
  • Book your accommodation well in advance during the busy tourist season (November to February).
  • Mobile connectivity can be limited in some remote areas, so don’t depend on your phone alone. Observe local guidance when boating and participating in other water activities.
  • Respect local communities and do not litter around the river.
  • Exercise caution near the international border and follow the directions of security forces.

If you are travelling in the monsoon, check the weather conditions as heavy rain can affect the roads and outdoor plans.

Dawki Meghalaya Tourist Places to Add to Your Itinerary

Along with the Umngot River and Shnongpdeng, travellers can explore several attractions in the surrounding region. Depending on your schedule, Mawlynnong, living root bridges, and nearby villages can be combined with the river experience.
