Why Is It Called Seven Sisters?

The name Seven Sisters originates from its seven tiers, which are stacked above the other up the mountainside. Think of seven standing on a staircase.  Here’s a twist most visitors would never notice. You won’t be able to see all seven of them from the road. Three tiers are clearly visible from below, but you need to climb a few steps, and then you can spot the fourth one. The remaining three stay hidden behind rock and thick forest.

So technically, you are meeting only half the family. The locals like to say the shy sisters show themselves only during the peak season, when the extra water spills out from behind the trees. The same stream then turns under the road, merging with the Dikchu River, and then eventually feeds the mighty Teesta. The story is quite fun to know, but knowing when to see it at its loudest, turn south to be much better.

Best Time to Visit Seven Sisters Waterfall Sikkim

To be true, a waterfall is only as good as the rain behind it. The Seven Sisters Waterfall Sikkim looks very different from one season to the next.

Season Months What the Falls Look Like Our Verdict
Monsoon June to September Loud, all tiers gushing, misty spray Very dramatic, but expect landslides and delays
Post Monsoon October to Mid-November Strong flow, clear blue skies The sweet spot
Winter December to February Thin streams, sometimes partly frozen Calm and Chilly, low drama
Spring March to May Moderate flow, rhododendron up north Great if you are combining with Yumthang

Our Pick: It is during the month of October. Why? Cause the monsoon has charged the falls and the roads have dried out, and then the skies are clear enough for clean photos. Autumn also happens to be the overall best time to visit Sikkim, so the timing works for the rest of your trip too. Spring is a close second, and many travellers argue it is one of the best times to visit Sikkim if flowers matter more than waterfalls.

What if you choose July? You will get thunder-level sound and soaked clothes. So pack a rain jacket and allow buffer time on the highway.

Now let us get you there.

So what do you do when you get there?

Things to Do at Seven Sisters Waterfall Sikkim

It’s a quick stop, but it doesn’t have to be a boring one.

  • Walk across the little footbridge. You cross it over the stream on the downstream side, and you get a face full of cool spray.
  • Tier four, climb a few steps. Most people stay on road level and don’t see it.
  • Get tea and momos from the canteen. The Tourism Department has put up a viewing shed and cafe here, and there are few better things than a hot cup with that view.
  • Take pictures with a slow shutter speed. Use a little tripod or put your phone on the railing to get that silky water effect.
  • Just hear. During the monsoon, the sound hitting the rocks sounds like rolling thunder.
