Best Time to Visit Darjeeling: Weather, Seasons & Ideal Time for Your Trip

In a nutshell, April is the second-best month to visit Darjeeling because of its mild climate and blooming tea country, while October or November offer the best mountain views.

That’s the solution. The remainder of this guide explains why, as well as which months you might want to choose. The catch is that “best” depends on what you’re looking for. A budget traveler, a photographer, and a honeymooner will all receive different responses.

The first factor that determines everything is the climate.

Why Darjeeling’s Weather Is So Tricky

Darjeeling is 2,045 m (6,700 ft) in the Eastern Himalaya. It’s got a temperate highland climate and swings hard between seasons.

Two figures tell most of the story.

  • Around 3,100 mm of rain a year. About 80% of it happens between June and September.
  • Only about 3% of rain in December to March.” The winter is cold, but dry.

So the key to finding the best month to visit Darjeeling is finding the right balance of views and rain, crowds and cost, warmth and clarity.

This is how the year is divided up.

Darjeeling weather in October is generally steady, with daytime highs of 10-18°C and clear spells. It is also festival season, with Durga Puja and Dashain filling town with energy. The trade flow out here is crowds. Hotels fill, taxis thin out, and prices climb.

There is one more risk: October 2025 brought floods and landslides during Puja, shutting NH10 and taking out bridges. Check the road conditions before you travel and add a buffer day.

Do you prefer less chaos and mild days? Here’s the alternative.

Here is the most frequently asked question that people ask next.

Darjeeling Snowfall Time: What’s the Truth?

Here is the most honest answer you will get for this question, and it is that snowfall in Darjeeling is rare!

At around 6,700 feet, it hardly snows in the town itself. Exceptional winters bring a dusting to Mall Road and Chowrasta, but you cannot plan a trip around it. The best window for any chance of snow is late December to February.

For reliable snow, you can go higher:

  • Sandakphu (about 12,000 ft)
  • Tumling
  • Tsomgo Lake and Nathula in Sikkim

So if snow is the goal, add Sikkim rather than just hopping in Darjeeling town. Which brings up a popular combination. Ready to plan your Darjeeling getaway?
